Redefining Leadership in Construction: Insights from Nicky Dobreanu

In an industry as demanding and dynamic as construction, the ability to adapt, connect with people, and think differently sets leaders apart. Nicky Dobreanu, Branch Director at Omnium International, offers a fresh perspective on leadership, career growth, and the shifts shaping the construction field today.

With decades of experience spanning multiple countries, Nicky shares valuable lessons that resonate not just with construction professionals but anyone looking to grow in their career. Here are the key takeaways from his journey and insights.

Breaking the Mold: A Career of Constant Growth

Nicky’s career began with a civil engineering degree focused on structures. This foundation in technical expertise led to various roles, from contractor work to consultancy. From Romania to Ireland, Qatar to Dubai, and now extending into Saudi Arabia, his career has been marked by new challenges and opportunities.

Nicky admits he still doesn’t have all the answers about what he wants to do long-term. Instead of viewing this as a limitation, he sees it as an opportunity to keep growing and evolving.

For Nicky, that mindset has allowed him to explore roles and industries beyond his comfort zone, including experiences like working as a radio DJ during his school years, which later helped shape his public speaking skills—a key aspect of leadership.

The Role of LinkedIn and Authentic Networking

For professionals in construction (and beyond), LinkedIn is an underutilized tool for networking and sharing knowledge. Many hesitate to post, fearing judgment or misconceptions, such as the assumption that being active on LinkedIn means you’re job hunting.

Nicky’s advice: Focus on sharing what you know, learning from others, and staying true to yourself. Authenticity trumps perfection. Whether you’re posting technical insights, leadership tips, or personal stories, staying real builds trust and connections.

He maintains a consistent routine on LinkedIn, scheduling two posts per week, typically on Mondays and Fridays. By planning ahead, he ensures his messaging stays relevant and impactful.

Instead of treating networking as transactional, Nicky views it as a long-term investment in relationships. From career opportunities to new ideas, networking opens doors in unexpected ways.

Leadership vs. Being a Boss

Nicky emphasizes the importance of removing hierarchies when leading teams. Leadership, for him, isn’t about titles or power. It’s about being approachable and building a culture of collaboration. He deters people from calling him “boss” and insists they use his first name instead.

This approach fosters openness and mutual respect, especially in environments as diverse as the Middle East. Living and working in culturally rich regions like Dubai has shaped Nicky’s belief that true leadership lies in connecting with people, regardless of their position.

Embracing Equity-Based Workplaces

One recent shift in the workplace Nicky discussed is the trend of companies offering equity to retain employees. While monetary salary hikes have been the norm, equity aligns employees’ success with the company’s growth, creating deeper motivation and accountability.

Still, Nicky notes that professionals should always prioritize personal fulfillment over incentives. “If companies don’t acknowledge your value, it’s time to move,” he advises. Benefits like equity are appealing, but they shouldn’t overshadow your overall job satisfaction.

Women in Construction: Progress and Challenges

Despite improvements, construction remains a male-dominated field, particularly at leadership levels. Nicky acknowledges the gap and underscores the importance of creating inclusive environments where women can thrive.

He hopes to see more companies adopt diversity-focused policies that don’t just tick boxes but genuinely integrate gender inclusion into their culture. However, he also emphasizes that women should feel empowered to challenge stereotypes within the industry and pursue roles they’re passionate about.

Saudi Arabia vs. Dubai: Navigating Career Choices

The Middle East region, particularly Saudi Arabia and Dubai, continues to attract construction professionals from around the world. While both markets present incredible opportunities, the choice between the two often depends on personal goals and circumstances.

Dubai offers a well-established, cosmopolitan lifestyle with easier integration for expatriates. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia’s rapid development presents exciting, large-scale projects that appeal to professionals seeking unique challenges. According to Nicky, understanding what you’re looking for—a short-term financial boost, long-term career growth, or a family-friendly environment—can help guide the decision.

The Power of Giving Back

Professional memberships, such as with RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), can be game-changing for construction professionals. Beyond adding credentials, they provide unparalleled opportunities to engage with industry peers, gain insights, and grow leadership skills.

For Nicky, taking part in advisory boards and RICS assessments isn’t just about receiving value—it’s about giving back. “Inspiring the next generation is what builds a stronger community,” he says. Like a strong foundation in construction, mentorship and knowledge-sharing create lasting impacts.

Key Advice for Quantity Surveyors and Career Growth

Nicky encourages professionals to reflect on what truly makes them happy. Titles, salaries, and recognition are secondary to personal fulfillment. If you enjoy what you do, opportunities will naturally follow.

For quantity surveyors, honing communication skills is key. Many in the field possess deep technical knowledge but struggle to articulate it effectively, especially when facing clients. Strengthening those soft skills can set you apart and open doors to leadership.

Lastly, don’t be afraid of change. Whether it’s pursuing new qualifications, shifting industries, or taking bold career moves, staying adaptable keeps you ahead in an ever-evolving field.

Conclusion

Leadership, in construction or any profession, isn’t about rigid hierarchies or perfect plans. It’s about staying open, building meaningful connections, and constantly learning. Nicky Dobreanu’s career journey is a testament to these principles.

Whether through embracing LinkedIn, fostering inclusive workplaces, or navigating global opportunities, the key is to lead with authenticity and purpose. As Nicky puts it, “If you like what you’re doing, things will come automatically.”

If you’re a professional looking to grow, take inspiration from Nicky’s approach: build relationships, stay curious, and don’t hesitate to take risks. Your next big opportunity might be waiting just outside your comfort zone.
